What are some examples of job redesign?

Illustration 1 – Specialisation in Human Resources (HR) Function

Tim Yeo
Tim YeoHR Executive (Before Job Redesign)
Before Job Redesign, my main responsibilities involves supporting a few business divisions and departments in the administration of HR functions for their staff.

As such, I am usually the go-to-person whenever the staff have any question pertaining to HR matters, e.g. employment terms and conditions, company benefits provisions, HR claims and leave process, etc.

The amount of enquiries per month can be sometimes extensive, as we manage a lot of part-timers based on locations all over the island.

Compensation & Benefits

(After Job Redesign)
The introduction of engagement chatbots has automated the clarification process, yet retaining the engagement experience of speaking to a person.

With job redesign, my job has been enhanced into a specialised role of HR Specialist (Compensation & Benefits).

With less enquiries coming in, I can devote my time to research, review and update our compensation and benefits package for the staff in my business units to better attract and retain the talents.

Illustration 2 – Specialisation in Early Childhood Teaching Domain

Margaret Lim
Margaret LimPre-School Teacher (Before Job Redesign)
Prior to job redesign, my job requires me to be a teacher, a cleaner, an outreach executive, a PR officer for parents, an admin executive, an event planner, a first aider, and the list goes on…

Given the multiple hats that I wear, coupled with the need to take care of the children during working hours, I often had to bring home administrative work due to the lack of time to complete them in school.

I felt that I’m stuck in this job with little or no opportunities for progression in my career.

(After Job Redesign)
With the adoption of Smart Solutions, my core teaching job has been simplified with the elimination of manual / repetitive tasks, such as printing and pasting of written notices in parent communication booklets, documentation of hardcopy children’s portfolio, etc.

With the time saved, my job has been redesigned to become a Teacher – Curriculum Specialist (Coding). This redesigned job allows me to perform higher-value tasks, such as designing coding curriculum and delivering interactive activities that introduce children to the world of coding.

Raymond Lee

(Before Job Redesign)
Prior to job redesign, I am expected to assist in the preparation of reports and schedules that are to be delivered to the clients and/or other external parties.

I usually spend a significant amount of time performing data entry work, such as capturing accounting transactions from hardcopy supplier invoices and/or payment vouchers into the Xero accounting software.

Whenever there is a new client, I am also responsible to manually prepare the letter of engagement and email them for approval.

(After Job Redesign)
As my company leverage on Robotic Process Automation (RPA) tools to automate some of the manual tasks, some of my time was freed up as I now only need to review the outputs of RPA processes and handle complex exceptional cases.

With the time saved, I can now act as an Accounting Client Advisor to provide strategic business advisory services to clients. In addition, I also take on elevated responsibilities to mentor and guide other junior / less experienced accounting client advisor.

Linda Ong
Linda OngService Crew (Before Job Redesign)
Prior to job redesign, I am responsible for taking customers’ orders in a restaurant setting, answering questions on meal items, making recommendations on meal bundles, serving food/beverages to customers, and performing cashiering duties.

In addition to my day-to-day F&B tasks, I also assist the Restaurant Manager with the incoming enquiries from customers who are looking at holding their private events in our restaurant.

(After Job Redesign)
With job redesign, my job has been enhanced to include a more formalised and specialised role of a F&B Events Executive.

I am now given the additional responsibility of identifying business opportunities. The Sales Management System also allows me to track and follow up on any new sales enquiries. I prepare sales proposals and quotations and ensure that events are executed smoothly. As part of the after-sales service, I follow up on customer concerns and feedback to resolve issues and ensure customer satisfaction for repeat business.
